Our flagship Youth Leadership program starts as a 4 day training, involving schools, clubs, and individuals from vastly differing school settings, cultures, and social economic status. These students start the weekend as strangers and finish it as life long friends.
This experiential youth leadership training camp creates an environment where students learn to recognize and embrace their individual strengths and weaknesses, the strengths and weaknesses of others, and learn to build personal and social tolerance for all traits in all people. Together students participate in activities that fundamentally assist them in understanding the profound impact their actions have on the world around them from the perspectives of social leadership and personal insight.
Through this experience students create a dynamic shift in their ability to relate to others offering a new paradigm of personal responsibility for the well-being of self and others. With this new paradigm students and staff return to their campuses with an action plan and the tools to create cultural change that increases school safety, individual well-being, and a setting where all students can thrive academically and socially.
Students are chosen by their school sites to participate in the training due to the leadership they demonstrate within their individual groups at school. We call this the ‘lunch table’ phenomenon. We ask schools to choose 3-5 top ‘influencers’ from each ‘lunch table’ otherwise known as clique. These students may not always be leading for good but they have the charisma to attract other students and keep the group intact. They also have the power to influence either for the positive or the negative and our training and awareness assists them to influence in positive ways. When perceived leaders are making positive choices the odds greatly increase that others around them will also.
Experiential learning is a method of learning through doing and feeling. When we are told something it has very little chance of sticking. When we do something it has a better chance of assimilation. When we act on and we feel our own emotions, and those of others, we have the best chance of sustainable outcomes.
